Once the official permit was obtained from the government of Zanzibar and the governors (Shehas) of Zambiani, the local fishers’ committee (which consists of the oldest fishermen of all neighboring villages) unanimously approved the sponge farming project for the planned sites. As a next step, marinecultures.org informed the local fishes. Okala, a Jambiani fisher closely involved in various environmental projects – our first marinecultures.org employee -- has been entrusted with the maintenance of the farm.
